Version 2026-10-15.1 · Aetherboard desktop application
Plain-English summary. This covers the app you install on your computer, as opposed to the Terms of Service, which cover playing on our address. You may install and use Aetherboard for free, on as many of your own machines as you like. You don't own the software; you have permission to use it. It comes with no warranty of any kind. Don't sell it, don't pretend you wrote it, and don't use it to break the law. If you don't agree, don't install it.
1. Agreement
This End User License Agreement ("Agreement") is between you and the individual operating Aetherboard ("we", "us"). By installing, copying, or using the Aetherboard desktop application and anything shipped with it ("the Software"), you agree to this Agreement. If you do not agree, do not install or use the Software.
2. License granted
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use the Software on computers you own or control, for your own tabletop gaming, at no charge. That's the whole grant. Everything not granted here is reserved.
3. What you may not do
- sell, rent, lease, sublicense or distribute the Software for a fee;
- remove or alter any copyright, license or attribution notice;
- present the Software as your own work, or as endorsed by or affiliated with anyone it isn't;
- use it to infringe copyright, including loading, distributing or selling game content you don't have the right to reproduce;
- use it to break any applicable law, or to harm others.
You may read, modify and adapt the Software for your own use. It is written in plain JavaScript and deliberately not obfuscated; poking at it to understand it is expected and welcome. This section restricts what you distribute, not what you learn.
4. Who owns what
We own the Software. This Agreement licenses it; it does not sell it.
You own your content. Characters, campaigns, notes, homebrew rules and anything else you create with the Software remain entirely yours. We claim no rights in them and the Software does not store them with us: everything you make lives on the machine hosting your game. When players reach your game through our service, what they and your machine send each other passes through it and is not kept (section 7).
5. Other people's software inside this one
The Software includes open-source components, each under its own license, among them Electron and Chromium (MIT and others), Node.js (MIT), React (MIT), Express (MIT) and Socket.IO (MIT). Those licenses govern those components and, where they conflict with this Agreement, they win. Their full texts are included with the Software.
The bundled fifth-edition rules content is from the System Reference Document 5.2, used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Wizards of the Coast has not endorsed this project and is not affiliated with it.
6. Updates
The Software can check whether a newer version exists and offer it to you. It will not install anything without you asking it to. An update is a new version of the Software and this Agreement applies to it too.
7. Hosting a game means running a server
When you click Host Game, your computer accepts network connections from people you invite. That is the entire point of the Software, and it is your responsibility: you choose who you share the address with, and whether to set a password. We are not a party to what happens at your table. If you expose your game to the public internet, you are running a public service on your own connection, with everything that implies.
If you are signed in when you host, the Software also connects to our service by itself, so players can reach you without your network address, and each game you have not marked Private is shown in the public list of games. Mark a game Private to keep it out of the list, or press Stop sharing to take it off our service. A table password is asked of people who come from the public list; somebody you gave your code to is your guest and is not asked. The Privacy Policy, section 19, says what passes through and what the list shows.
8. NO WARRANTY
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. We do not warrant that the Software will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will not lose data. It is a hobby project written by one person.
9. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, LOST DATA, OR LOST CAMPAIGNS, ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO THE SOFTWARE, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN TOLD SUCH DAMAGES ARE POSSIBLE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SOFTWARE WILL NOT EXCEED ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS ($100).
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or the limitation of certain damages, so parts of sections 8 and 9 may not apply to you. Nothing here limits liability for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
Keep your own backups. The Software can copy your games elsewhere and we strongly suggest you let it.
10. Your responsibility for your use
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from claims, damages and reasonable legal costs arising from your use of the Software, your content, or your breach of this Agreement. That is not us expecting trouble. It means that if you load a book you don't have the rights to and its publisher objects, that is between you and them.
11. Ending it
This license lasts until it ends. It ends automatically if you breach it, and you may end it any time by uninstalling the Software and deleting your copies. Sections 4, 8, 9 and 10 survive.
12. Export and government use
You may not use or export the Software in violation of United States export laws, including to embargoed countries or to parties on a U.S. government denied-party list. If the Software is acquired by or for the U.S. Government, it is "commercial computer software" under FAR 12.212 and DFARS 227.7202, licensed with only the rights granted here.
13. Governing law
This Agreement is governed by the laws of the State of Arizona, U.S.A., without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Maricopa County, Arizona, and you consent to their jurisdiction. The U.N. Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply.
14. Everything else
This Agreement, with the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy, is the whole agreement about the Software. If a court finds part of it unenforceable, the rest stands. Our not enforcing something once doesn't waive it. We may update this Agreement for new versions; the version you accepted governs the copy you installed.
