Getting started
What is Aetherboard?
A virtual tabletop you host yourself. Your friends join from a browser. More about Aetherboard
Do I need to install anything?
No. Open your GM’s link in any browser. You only need the app to host.
Is it free?
Yes. A free account hosts 3 saved games with 4 players and a GM each. Memberships make tables bigger.
What is the shop?
The shop will sell memberships, game systems and content. Payments aren’t open yet, so Buy and Subscribe charge nothing. Only the host needs to own a game system.
Can I request something for the shop?
Yes. Fill in the request form. It goes on Shop requests, where everybody can vote. We answer the most-voted first and only add what’s openly licensed or approved by its owner.
What are cloud saves?
With Pro or higher, open the GM panel and press Save to my cloud under Backup. On another computer, download it from Your cloud saves and use Restore from a file.
Is there a Discord?
Yes. Join the Aetherboard Discord. Connect it on the community page and your membership shows as a role.
How do I run a game?
- Install the app.
- Pick a saved game or start a new one.
- Press Host Game.
Set a table password before sharing it online.
How do my friends join?
They open play.aetherboard.app, find your game in the list and press Join. Your game is in that list when you host while signed in. If the app says On your wifi only, press Share online.
On the same wifi they can also open the address shown under Host a game.
A private game isn’t in the list. Send them your code from the app, and they enter it under Have a code?. Your home address stays hidden.
Hosting online needs a free account with a confirmed email.
Is there a Mac version?
Not yet. Macs, phones and tablets can play in a browser. Hosting needs the app, on Windows or Linux.
Windows says “unknown publisher”. Is it safe?
Windows warns about unsigned apps, and ours isn’t signed yet. If your browser says the file “isn’t commonly downloaded”, choose Keep from the download’s ⋯ menu. Then click More info and Run anyway.
Smart App Control blocks unsigned apps outright. Play in your browser instead. Only get the app from aetherboard.app.
How do updates work?
Small updates install themselves and are checked first. They start next time the app opens, or press Restart now. Damaged ones are ignored.
At the table
What games can I play?
The free 5th Edition rules (the 2024 and 2014 editions), two starter games, or a game system you make yourself.
Can I make my own game?
Yes. Press Make or edit a game system in the app and fill in the form, with a live sheet beside it. Make my own version copies an existing game.
Who rolls the dice?
The host’s computer rolls them. Every roll shows in the log except the GM’s secret rolls.
How does advantage work?
The game works it out from conditions and shows why on the roll, like “Disadvantage: Poisoned”.
Can players see the whole map?
No. The host’s computer sends each player only what their token can see.
Can other players see my sheet?
No. Only you and the GM see it. Others see your name, token and health bar.
What if my internet drops?
You show as reconnecting, and when you’re back you pick up where you left off.
Why is the game restarting?
We’re installing an update. Players get 30 minutes’ warning and reconnect by themselves after a few seconds.
How do I switch devices?
Copy your seat code from At the table and paste it when you join from the other device.
Your account
Do I need an account?
Not to join a game. You need one to host, share a game or hold a membership.
Why confirm my email?
It proves the address is yours. You need it to sign in, host or share games. No email? Press Send me the link again.
Why did sign-in ask for a code?
You’re on a new device, or your email isn’t confirmed yet. Type the code we emailed, and tick Trust this device to skip it next time.
Didn’t try to sign in? Someone has your password. Change it now.
I forgot my password.
Choose Forgot your password? for a reset link (it lasts 10 minutes), or Email me a sign-in link to sign in without one.
How do I change my email?
Choose Change email in your profile and open the link we send. Your old address is told and can undo it for a week.
Someone got into my account.
Change your password in your profile, then press Sign out everywhere else under Trusted devices. If your email was changed, the email to your old address can undo it. Then tell us below.
What do you keep about me?
Your username, your email (encrypted, and mostly hidden on screen), a hashed copy of your password that can’t be turned back into the password, a label for each trusted device, like Chrome on Windows, and a billing address if you give us one. We don’t store your internet address. See the privacy policy.
Do AI companies get my posts or games?
No. AI crawlers may only read pages we wrote. Your games stay on the host’s computer unless you save them to the cloud. We don’t run AI on your content. See the terms.
Problems at the table
A player is spoiling my game.
In At the table, under People at this table:
- Ask to step away removes them from the table, and they can come back.
- Mute stops their messages.
- Time out removes them for 5 minutes up to a day.
- Ban removes them until you lift it.
Undo any of them from the same list.
How do I report a player, or the GM?
Press the flag beside their name. Only we see reports, the player isn’t told, and we read each one before anything happens.
Why was a name refused?
Names everyone sees can’t contain slurs. Refused by mistake? Tell us below and we’ll fix it.
Ask us a question
Tell us what happened and where. We reply by email.
